# my best pixs my ranking of the best picture nominees. i watched all of them except for the Zone of Interest which i want to watch even though i think it will hurt me ## 9 poor things i was simply not on the same wavelength as this film. too much sex and it was all so boring, unsexy, and artless. such a missed opportunity to explore themes like the mysteries of biology, what it means to be human, motherhood and daughterhood, coming of age, etc... but it was all just about carnality. BORING i do appreciate this movie for helping me understand my own thoughts about sex in movies. i used to think i simply did not enjoy sex scenes, but now i realize i just dont like non-erotic non-artistic sex scenes. which I think all of the sex scenes in this movie were. pacing was dumb too and the ending just felt like tacking on extra stuff with no purpose. the titles and credits were impeccable. overall do not like ## 8 barbie if you had told me that i would be ranking barbie ABOVE poor things i would have said you were nuts but here we are. i was still so so disappointed in this film for its gender essentialism, felt like a type of feminism that should have died off in the 2000s. men bad women good the real hero is Chevrolet SUVs. lots of wonderful moments, my favorite song of the year (What Was I Made For, so well deserving of the Original Song win in my eyes). there was a moment when I thought this movie was going to be about being human, when Barbie came to the real world and just looked around. That was beautiful and made me cry. then will Ferrell went to barbie land and it just plain sucked. Ken was the worst character i have seen and I love Ryan Gosling so much. sucks that all women are allowed to be diverse of body but men are only allowed to be hunks in barbie land. sucks that only women can be on the Supreme Court and the still uphold the moral doctrine of capitalism. sucks that America Ferrera gives a great speech about being a "woman" but 90% of the speech is just about being a person living under capitalism so even though i relate im fully excluded. sucks that the men are the enemy instead of the ruling class. great songs great costumes great acting from Margot Robbie terrible overall. ## 7 american fiction from here on up they are all good. I liked this a lot and thought it was quite funny at times. did not feel like it stuck the landing. total cop out ending. great acting and really fun and complex concept done justice. would have liked a more pure comedy or pure drama lane, felt muddled sometimes and didn't quite live up to either side. glad this movie exists. ## 6 killers of the flower moon what a bummer. earned its runtime for me. would have liked more of a focus on the Osage people but it is what it is. Lily incredible. Leo so hateable. De Niro just making me think about how he just had a baby and he's way too old for that. i truly love long movies. I think all movies should be 3+ hours with an intermission in between. sad story told compellingly. amazing immersion in the world. overall pretty good ## 5 anatomy of a fall for me this is definitionally four stars. super solid all around, great acting and writing. ultimately just felt smaller than other films and was not evocative as much for me personally. great dog acting of course ## 4 maestro haven't heard anyone say they like this but boy did I like it. Carey Mulligan amazing. I think she deserved the Oscar. Bradley Cooper looked so old. music of course amazing. I loved the black and white act one SO MUCH and wanted to live there. I feel like it peeked at the complexity of human life with enough nuance for me to appreciate it. I truly just love music. the music was pure joy in this. I loved some of the magical old-hollywood transitions in the first part. dang I liked this more than I should ## 3 oppenheimer the winner! and I think it was well-deserved. those who know me know I am a huge Nolanhead so I naturally enjoyed this (even though it was not my fav Nolan movie). a triumph and a feat. sound amazing. acting amazing. visuals amazing. editing amazing, pacing amazing. not a perfect film and not my favorite but to make a movie this gargantuan and intricate is incredibly impressive. man i loved the beginning part. and I loved the part where they were making the bomb. to feel so excited and then remember what they were doing. almost more disturbing that it only peeked at the actual destruction. I wanted that convo with einstein to last for another hour. really incredible use of framing and flashbacks/flashforwards. this is a MOVIE!!!!! ## 2 the holdovers a perfect film. almost don't want to say anything else. pure human warmth and delight. my heart was wrenched. i laughed so much when he threw that football. Paul deserved the Oscar. brilliant writing and he brought it to life with such grace. perfect story, beginning middle and end. just delightful. ## 1 past lives this movie changed the way i think about my life, which is super rare for me at this age. the realest thing i have seen in a long time. such a simple story that you could tell in two sentences, but an incredibly powerful one. every moment was in service of that story, a little piece building a monument to the complexity of human relationships. truly remarkable, beautiful, tremendous. small in scale but huge in substance. my top film of the year
